Although nowadays, it is hard to come by a descent horror movie, this was one of those that didn’t disappoint. Granted this movie has its similarities to Saw and Hostel, but it is not gore porn and uses gore selectively. It does something more challenging by presenting the main character as an antagonist, and slowly turning him into the protagonist, and challenging his morality. It will have you holding your breath, gasping for air and making you cringe. This movie does not take cheap shots by randomly throwing things in your face, and randomly amping up the music for easy scares. This film slowly build tension by playing with the moral dilemmas presented to our lead character. Locked in a viciously booby trap laden house with a monster, there are no weapons and no way out.

PA lucked out with its success. The right marketing, and timely release kept it afloat in theaters. PA’s producers didn’t even have enough faith in it to release it nationwide.

I get it, the fact that you dont need hardcore violence or gallons of blood poured on screen to make you truly feel terrified. I also get the fact that the truly scary things in life arent always seen face to face. People all over the world have fears of different things, and that’s why I wont point fingers with ridicule, but how can the majority of people who see this be so easily scared? If your telling me that the fact that a door, some wind, some plants, and a shadow can be hailed as some original masterpiece of the horror genre, then we have some serious issues to discuss.

You might be tired of hearing it, but yes, The Blair Witch project did the same thing several years back, only better. Building the myth of the Blair Witch through stories of the locals who lived n the area and going from there is what helped set the tone for the movie and it just carried the film. TBWP keeps PA from being the original film people are making it out to be. People who are praising this movie either scare too easily or are just falling under the marketing gimmik Paramount has laid out to admit how foolish they were to wait in line and spend a ridiculous amount of money to see it. I however, am not afraid to say that I got duped by word of mouth and the sly marketing tactics used. The worst thing is, I practically begged them to play this movie in my city, by going to their website and using the “Demand It” button”

Am I the only one who found the first 75% of the movie a complete and dull waste of valuable time and opportunity for suspense. Fear is usually generally built up over the course of time, but to go that long without truly implying a sense of fear is unfair. When we do get a slight adrenaline rush, the rug is pulled, and we go back to the seemingly pointless ventures of Micah, Katie, and the camera, to only start the build up again from scratch, and repeating that over and over. I will go ahead and say that I did somewhat enjoy the last 25% of the movie, and some moments in between, but if you put it in perspective, I just payed $18 for a a well done half hour youtube clip. There are real horror directors and writers out there (and no i’m not talking about movies like Hostel) but movies like, The Exorcist, Quarantine/REC, Splinter, High Tension (yeah it was gory but it was epic), and Bug, to name a few. Why the ridiculous praise for this one?
